A word from Elle Barbara, re: Shemale Reprezent!

Hello everyone; Nappy New Year!

We've noticed some people cringed at the use of the word 'shemale' in our event description [Shemale Reprezent!], which as you all must know is considered offensive by many in our community. Our use of the word however is very much steeped in the concept of reappropriation, a process by which minority groups reclaim terms that are normally used to disparage them, so as to empower themselves. Please note that our use of the term 'shemale' is in no way an attempt to normalize it among non-trans feminine communities, which is to say that non-trans folks should still avoid using it. With that said, in certain contexts, such as [plug] a forthcoming party series thrown by Taking What We Need's own Elle Barbara (TS Ellise), the use of the word becomes inevitable, as it is part of the event's name, which is to say that everyone is welcome to say they're attending Shemale Reprezent! while avoiding the use of the term in other contexts, such as to describe trans women both individually or collectively, even when joking. We hope that this little explanation cleared things up and would like to take advantage of this moment to invite you all to the upcoming first edition of Shemale Reprezent! on January 27 at Sala, featuring trans feminine deejays of color, and hosted by Elle.
